Over the last several Sundays the Church has focused on the Gospel of Luke. More than any other Gospel... we hear several accounts of Jesus in prayer.

The story of Mary and Martha is a reminder that you and I are spiritually fortified to go out and minister to the world in word and deed.

The story of the Good Samaritan challenges us to stop being self-centered and become other-centered, ironically, finding ourselves by encountering and helping the other.

Al comenzar el mes de julio, celebramos el Día de la Independencia de nuestra nación; un momento para hacer una pausa en nuestras labores diarias y considerar el significado de nuestro lugar en la comunidad estadounidense.

As we begin the month of July, we mark our nation’s celebration of Independence Day; a time to take a break from our daily labors and consider the significance of our place in the American community.  

Me uno en expresar mi más profunda tristeza a las familias de los que perecieron dentro del remolque de un camión abandonado en San Antonio. Cerca de 50 migrantes, adultos y niños, murieron y muchos otros permanecen hospitalizados.

I join in expressing my deepest sorrow to the families of those who perished inside a tractor trailer abandoned in San Antonio. Nearly 50 migrants, adults and children, died and many others remain hospitalized.

A medida que el mes de junio llega a su fin, estoy agradecido por las numerosas celebraciones litúrgicas que celebré en nuestra diócesis. Diez Misas de Confirmación, numerosas Misas de Graduaciones y la ordenación de tres hombres al sacerdocio.

As the month of June comes to an end, I am grateful for the many liturgical celebrations I celebrated across our diocese. Ten Confirmation Masses, numerous Baccalaureate Masses and the ordination of three men to the priesthood. Last weekend, we launched our diocesan Eucharistic Revival, calling on the faithful to renew their love for Christ in the Holy Eucharist.

Doy gracias por la decisión de la Corte Suprema que resguarda el don de la vida que Dios nos ha dado. El compromiso de la Iglesia de proteger la vida humana desde la concepción hasta la muerte natural se mantiene firme. Espero que este fallo sea recibido con genuino respeto mutuo y cuidado por el bien común.

I am grateful for the Supreme Court’s decision that upholds the gift of life given to us by God. The Church’s commitment to protect human life from conception until natural death remains steadfast.  I hope this ruling is met with genuine respect for one another and care for the common good.

Hoy, al celebrar el Día del Padre, oramos por y les agradecemos a los hombres que trabajan para mantener y se sacrifican por sus familias. También honramos a los hombres que brindan cuidado paterno a los demás. ​​​​​​​ Por aquellos padres que han cumplido su tarea en la tierra; que descansen en el abrazo amoroso de Dios. Que todos los padres vean y sigan el ejemplo de San José, el padre adoptivo de nuestro Señor Jesús, que fue obediente, humilde y amoroso. Les deseo un bendecido día del padre.

Today, as we celebrate Father’s Day, we pray for and thank the men who work to provide and sacrifice for their families. We also honor the men who provide fatherly care to others. ​​​​​​​ For those fathers who have completed their work on earth; may they rest in the loving embrace of God. May all fathers seek and follow the example of St. Joseph, the foster father of our Lord, Jesus, who was obedient, humble and loving. I wish you a blessed Father’s Day.

On June 18, the faithful of the Diocese of Austin joined to celebrate a Eucharistic Procession in honor of the Feast of Corpus Christi.

This weekend, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, also known as Corpus Christi Sunday. The source and summit of the Christian life, this celebration highlights the belief that in the Eucharist we come into the real presence of Christ. When the priest, who is in the person of Christ, pronounces the words, “This is my Body, this is my Blood,” the bread and wine become the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ.

Uno de los momentos más preciados de mi ministerio como obispo es el presidir en las ordenaciones al sacerdocio. Mañana es uno de esos días, cuando a través de la imposición de mis manos y la oración de la consagración sacerdotal, esta Iglesia local dará la bienvenida al sacerdocio de Jesucristo a tres hombres que escucharon el llamado del Espíritu Santo y dijeron sí a una vida de gracia.  

One the most treasured moments of my ministry as a bishop is to preside over ordinations to the priesthood. Tomorrow is one such day, when by the laying on of my hands and the prayer of priestly consecration, this local Church will welcome into the priesthood of Jesus Christ three men who heard the call of the Holy Spirit and said yes to a life of grace.  

Os animo a que invitéis a vuestros familiares, amigos y vecinos a que se unan a vosotros el 18 de junio para que, juntos, como un solo Cuerpo de Cristo, podamos iniciar este viaje de renovación eucarística, reflexión y rededicación a su cuerpo más precioso. 

Estas últimas semanas han abierto una herida dolorosa en nuestra nación relacionada a la violencia y el uso de armas de fuego en las escuelas, lugares de trabajo, centros comerciales e incluso casas de culto.

The past several weeks have opened a painful wound in our nation related to violence and the use of guns in schools, places of work, shopping centers, and even houses of worship.
