April 30, 2025, will mark the 50th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon in 1975. This date, also known as ‘Black April,’ marks the end of the Vietnam War and is used as a day of remembrance to honor the lives lost. The aftermath of the war left many families vulnerable and prompted hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese people to flee the country. Many were welcomed as refugees in the United States, and among this group, many are our own Vietnamese Catholic brothers and sisters.
The Diocese of Austin is enriched by the diversity of people in Central Texas. It is certain that the gifts the Vietnamese Apostolate bring to our local church cultivates the cultural and spiritual growth of the community.
In solidarity with our Vietnamese peers, there are several ways to commemorate this occasion. Some ways you can do this are by dedicating your daily mass in remembrance of the 50th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon, praying a Rosary for Justice and Peace, or offering a Holy Hour for Peace.
On this occasion, please keep this branch of our Catholic family in your prayers. We entrust our prayers with the intercession of Our Lady of La Vang and all Holy Vietnamese Martyrs, in asking God to guide us in his mission for love, healing, and compassion.
O Mary, Holy Mother of La Vang, Mother of God and our most loving Mother, pour out your abundant blessings upon your children who earnestly implore you. Give us a heart of compassion and charity to build a culture of love and life. Help us to live lives of virtue and hope, so that we may enjoy eternal life and the happiness of the Trinity with you for all eternity. Amen.
O God, you kept the Martyrs Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc and his companions faithful to the Cross of your Son, even to the shedding of their blood. May we be your children in name and in truth through spreading your love among our brothers and sisters. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Good and gracious God, we thank you for the gift of families.
We are grateful for all of the joy and love that they bring into our lives, and we ask that you provide special protection for all families, particularly those who face hardships as they move in search of a better life.
