Our late Pope Francis once said to Fathers, “I ask that you have the grace to be very close to your children, letting them grow, but being by their side. They need you, your presence, to be there, your love.”
This Sunday, we celebrate Father’s Day—a special time to give thanks for all fathers, those still with us and those who have gone to the Lord. We also pray for adoptive and foster fathers, as well as those men who lovingly step into the role of fatherhood for people who need a father figure. The best fathers are those who care for their families, protect them, provide for them, teach them, spend time with them, and above all, pray with them. On Father’s Day we also pray for our priests, who are called to be “spiritual fathers” entrusted with the care of a family—God’s family—as they serve, teach and pray with their communities.
Invoking the intercession of St. Joseph, the foster Father of Jesus, we ask God’s blessing on all our fathers that with the humble and brave example of St. Joseph and the strength of the Holy Spirit, they will be good fathers, giving their children the love and support to grow in wisdom and holiness.
