As we arrive at the sixth week of this blessed season of Easter, we continue to listen to the early days of the Church through the Acts of the Apostles. As Jesus came to the end of his earthly ministry, he promised to send us the Holy Spirit. As it was for the newly founded Church and remains for us today, the Holy Spirit moves among the faithful, echoing the mission of Jesus among us who sends us forth to announce the Good News.
In our own communities – our family among families, we invite others to journey with us and to accomplish the work of God in the world. Last week, we heard Jesus say love one another as I have loved you. As our nation and world is beset by yet another senseless tragedy of racial hatred and violence, pained by the hardships facing the people of Ukraine, and the ever present reality of poverty, racism, and a culture that is self-centered, it is comforting that the Spirit gives us a peace that the world cannot give.
May the Holy Spirit, whose radiant glory fills us with wisdom and holiness, direct us on the journey to encounter our risen Lord; confident that the Spirit be with us always, leading the faithful of our Diocese and beyond to his peace.
Bishop Vásquez Message on recent Racial Violence Our faith teaches us that each form of social and cultural discrimination is morally unacceptable and incompatible with God’s design (cf. Catechism, no. 1935). To violently target innocent people on account of their race or ethnicity is a brazen disregard of natural law that violates the dignity of the human person. The inviolable dignity of human life transcends the value of all creation. Read Bishop Vásquez’ complete message here.
