Once again, our nation has experienced the tragic loss of life in a most dramatic way. As we continue to mourn the death of innocent children at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, we now see the evil of violence taking the life of a participant in the public square and the chaos of violence inflicted on school children in Colorado. The murder of innocent people across our nation over and over again, from all walks of life and from differing perspectives on the issues of our time, must be met with firm resolve and unceasing prayer – that God will deliver us from attacks on peaceful and free debate. We remain committed to civil dialogue amid divergent opinions and to healing over hate. Every human life is sacred, and we must refuse to accept the sin of violence that destroys God’s greatest gift, the human person. Together with Bishop Daniel E. Garcia, let us recommit ourselves to be peacemakers in our communities and beyond, asking our mother Mary, Queen of Peace, to intercede for our world as we call out to Jesus, the Prince of Peace, for a new birth to grace and goodness for all humanity.
